In This Body

Kabir

8 Sept, 2024

In this body, endless gardens
And the creator of gardens, in this body
But you search in the dark!

In this body, the seven oceans
And the nine billion stars, in this body
But you search in the dark!

In this body, treasures and jewels
And the knower of riches, in this body
But you search in the dark!

In this body, the sound of the universe
And fountains of elation, in this body
But you search in the dark!

Kabir says, listen seekers
My guru, too, is right here
But you search in the dark!

Notes

In one of his most iconic and powerful songs, Kabir describes the marvels of the worlds within! This very body, this self, contains the entire universe within it. But we insist on looking outside, in the darkness.
Kabir refers to the body as ghat, a divine container, holding immense beauty, life, and the Creator Himself. He criticizes those who seek God outside in temples, rituals, or in the external world, while remaining blind to the divinity within themselves. This darkness (ignorance) symbolizes a lack of awareness about the spiritual treasures/ truth within.
The "seven oceans" and "nine lakh stars" symbolize the vast, infinite potential and knowledge contained within each person. Kabir suggests that the entire universe is reflected in our inner being, and we hold the essence of all creation within.
The true Guru and guide are within us. Searching outside is futile unless we turn inward to find the source of wisdom and enlightenment.
